After planning our steps to finding our “purple cows” (our niche) and inhaling savory Taiwanese, my friend Midori mentioned heading to Value Village afterwards to drop off bags of old clothing. So I had to ask, “Anything I might like?”
I’m a little embarrassed to admit…Maybe it was because it was cold and dark, and we just wanted to all go home, but I ended up taking a surprise 32-gallon bag of clothes.
Thirty minutes later, Jeffrey and I are giggling back at his house rummaging through the bag. It was ridiculously fun! We were playing dress up, trying to figure out what decade some of the clothes were from. There was a spaghetti strap tank top, a pair of pink terry-cloth pants, and a faded denim skirt.
And then it hit me. I’m hoarding a slew of my own outdated clothes. I need a major closet cleanse. So as soon as I got home, I grabbed a couple of plastic garbage bags and swung open my closet. Haul ass! I chucked my low-rise skinny jeans I haggled for in Saigon, I tossed an ultra worn scarf I got 6 birthdays ago, and I finally let go of my high school prom dress. (I know. But it was a contemporary dress, good enough to wear again. Except I didn’t.)
Some things were easier to let go of than others, but some I had to reevaluate. I wasn’t keeping anything for sentimental reasons. It’s just some things were too cute.
I asked myself, ”When was the last time I wore this?” Cute on the hanger, but not for me.
As I stood in front of my newly spacious closet at 1 in the morning, I got a better understanding of my style and what looks good on me. Better yet, I learned where the holes were in my wardrobe. Time to go shopping, but this time I really know what I need.
How’s your wardrobe looking? When was the last time you cleaned out your closet?
