OMG! I did the most exhilarating thing the other week. Guess what I did. I’ll give you a clue. It has to do with flying. Yes! I went trapeze flying, and it was so much fun.
About a month ago, I learned about this cool trapeze place near my work, and I’ve been wanting to go ever since. The truth is, I’m deathly afraid of heights. For real. During the summer, I climbed to the top of my work’s building to check out the view, but I totally freaked about coming down. I froze in front of that ladder for what felt like an hour. Ok, I exaggerate, but my boss had to walk me through it. “Joanne, just put one foot down at a time. I’m right behind you. You won’t fall.”
So why’d I go trapeze flying if I’m so afraid of heights? Because I wanted to do something new and exciting. GOOOOOOO, JO!
Imagine it: there I was 200 feet up in the air. My heart was racing and my palms were sweating. I did all I could to keep myself from looking down that small little platform. As I’m chalking up my hands, my head was a whirl. “What if I miss the bar? OMG! FALL! BONES! CRUSHED!”
The thing about fear is, it’s scarier than it is. You know, it’s that unknown factor. When you don’t know, you build it up to be the worst possible outcome, and you freeze up. Keeping yourself from even trying.
“Just do it,” I keep telling myself.
“1, 2, UP!” And I jump.
What I’ve found about facing your fears is to just do it. Don’t think about it, and just go for it. And if you have a friend to support you or even jump with you, even better (thanks for flying with me, Nicole!). Once you conquer your fear, you’ll feel on top of the world. I totally did! Being in the air, swinging freely back and forth, was amazing. Ahhh..what’s next. Indoor skydiving? Racing with the bulls? Becoming a fashion editor? ;) I can do anything.
So I encourage you to do something new and scary. It can be anything. Maybe it’s working a bold floppy hat or hiking your first trail. Just go for it. You’ll feel so accomplished.
If you’re feeling inspired to fly trapeze or were even planning it, check out some ideas on what to wear. Hey, I’m an aspiring fashion editor. I gotta share some adventure-seeking, fear-conquering outfits.
